Top 4 Tips to Consider When Hiring a Private Investigator
  1. Ask for the Private Investigator License - This may seem like a no-brainer to most, but, this requesting to see the prospective private investigator's Private Investigator license may slip your mind or get overlooked until you are too invested. So, don't forget to ask for the license so you can ensure they have the credentials to handle your case!
  2. Validate Insurance - Having insurance is a requirement to do business as a private investigator, so do make sure to see that they show you proof of insurance and that it is current and valid in the state you are in. You want protection from liability, and this is the best way to receive that protection.
  3. Get Testimonials & References - As in many other areas of life, what other people say moves the needle on decision-making. Aside from being qualified and possessing the experience to handle your prospective case, what references does your prospective private investigator have? Are they credible? Do they openly showcase testimonials to share how things went with them? This is not necessarily a dealbreaker as most cases are confidential, handled discreetly, and testimonials can often be "surface level" but it is a sure way to gauge their ability. Reference checks lead to tremendous insight (again, scrubbed for confidentiality) that may not be shown in a public testimonial. You only need a few prior clients to check with to get a sense of whether or not you want to move forward.
  4. Obtain a Work Sample - Evidence is a crucial part of investigations and the court cases that they help influence. Is it high enough quality to sway a decision? Whether a video, photo, written report or other form - get a sample so you can understand what you can expect. Look for time and date stamps. Are reports legible and error-free? How detailed is the information? You'll know what to expect with your case by looking at what has been done for others before you.
